Discovering the Sun
by Jacqueline Mehrabi.with illustrations by Susan
Reed
"Verily, the religion of God is like unto
heaven;
fasting is its sun, and obligatory prayer is its
moon."
In part two of this tale of a young girl's spiritual growth,
set in the isles of Orkney, we rejoin Fern just as she is about
to go away to school on the main island. Will she get on there?
Will she make friends? Will she be homesick? All the worries
of a teenager leaving the nest for the first time are added to
the main thing on Fern's mind; how will she cope with her very
first Fast within the walls of a boarding school?
But Fern is not the only "odd one out" in a strange,
new place. Before the term is over she will come to learn not
only that the Fast can be a source of nourishment to herself
and others, but also that both tests and blessings can come from
quite unexpected directions.
Jacqueline Mehrabi has written many books for young people,
including The Love of Bahá'u'lláh, Stories
of Abdu'l-Bahá, and Stories of the Greatest Holy
Leaf. Having raised her own family in Orkney, she currently
lives on the Scottish mainland. In Fern, Jacqueline has created
a character anyone would be proud to have as a friend.
Susan Reed is an illustrator and graphic designer

Discovering the Sea
by Jacqueline Mehrabi with illustrations by Susan
Reed
Discovering the Sea is the third book about Fern and takes
place one summer on her home island in Orkney. It involved five
young people aged 11 to 16 who discover a love for the Covenant
in the Will of Bahá'u'lláh (Kitáb-i-'Ahd)
and the Will and Testament of `Abdu'l-Bahá. All
the characters find something to relate to in these important
Tablets, which they express in their own unique ways.
Included in the main subject are stories involving
Fern's brothers and sister and friends. The history of the islands,
both actual and mythical, is intertwined to make this story a
cultural experience as well as an ongoing spiritual journey of
discovery.
